31 Day Fit Challenge!

31

As I sat listening to my children splashing and playing in the pool it dawned on me that OMG today is the last day of July…ummm what the heck wasn’t it just the 4th of July? I started thinking I want to do something fun and special on my blog for the month of August, but what? Then it hit me…a 31 day tailored workout challenge! A little backstory:  Over the last few months I have really be struggling with staying motivated…I unfortunately had a bad experiencing with a VERY well know fitness program and its creator {but thats another story for another day…maybe} the bad experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth and a beat down unmotivated heart…sad but true. I have been feeling like I REALLY need a kick in the pants and prayed that I would feel motivated and re-start my journey…then yesterday I got a HUGE motivation when a friend hit her 1 year weightloss journey anniversary and is down more than 80lbs!! Talk about motivation right?

Hey! Lets start a journey together!

I mentioned above that this will be tailored to each person…what do I mean? We will start each week with a fitness test to see our personal fitness level! It’s actually pretty basic workout but will give results:

  • Squats
  • Push ups
  • Crunches
  • Cardio
  • Walking

Daily Cardio: This can be anything you want…Zumba, running, piyo, crossfit…etc. Just something that gets you heart pounding for 10-30 minutes.

Daily Walking: A minimum of 1 mile daily {thats really easy to get you’ll be surprised} My husband and I walk 4-6 miles every single day. If you start out walking 1 mile increase by a 1/2 mile each week until September, working towards 3+ miles.

Fitness Test: Tomorrow {and each Monday this month} will be a fitness test! What does this mean? Basically we are going to set a timer for 1 minutes {we will increase this each week} and see how many Crunches, Push ups and squats we can do!

Don’t forget to print this Fitness Log to keep track of your daily workouts!

31challenge

How the fitness test works: grab a timer and set it for one minute then do as many Crunches as you can do in that minute, reset the timer and do as many squats as you can do, then reset and do as many push ups you can do. DON’T forget to write down your scores on the Fitness Log! The numbers you record are your starting scores, each day you will try to beat the previous days score so you are competing with yourself not someone else!…you may only be able to do 3-5 more but trust me as the days go by you will be surprised how much more strength and stamina you have!

Things to do tomorrow morning:

  • Weigh in {don’t skip this because it will be motivating to see the difference between the 1st weigh in and the last.}
  • Take a full body photo {I know some of you just cringed but this will be such a great motivator throughout the month.
  • make sure you have cold water in the fridge or freezer {especially with the hot weather you NEED to stay hydrated!}

I will meet you back here tomorrow afternoon and let you know my day 1 scores and how I’m doing!

If you haven’t already subscribed please do! I want to know how you are doing throughout the month!

Women’s Scala Ribbon Sun Hat Review

scala_header_04042014

Recently I was sent the Women’s Scala Sun Hat in Fuchsia to review. {This beautiful hat is from the Scala Collezione collection} I like to keep my head covered in bright sun however I have had a difficult time finding a sun hat that I like, I don’t an uncomfortable or heavy weaved hat…no one want that on a hot sunny day. This hat is perfection!  It has an awesome 4 inch brim really protects my face, neck and head from sun exposure, which is fantastic because it the summer my kids pretty much live in the pool!  Not only is this hat functional but it is very pretty, with a cute bow and made from a ric-rac style ribbon making it light and airy while it protects!

scalahat1

Don’t let the prettiness fool you, it more that just a pretty hat, it also has UPF 50+ UV protection and is made from a 70/30% cotton/poly blend.

This hat also has great pack ability and recovery. Because of its light weight it bounces back into shape with extreme ease…yay no more smushed ruined hats. It can easily stored in a beach bag or purse with out the fear of ruining it.

This hat is ideal to wear:

  • Sitting in the sun reading or watching the kids
  • By the Pool
  • At the Lake
  • On a Walk
  • While Gardening

What I’m Reading | July | With My Eyes Wide Open

BHW

If the name Brian “Head” Welch sounds familiar to you it’s probably because he is the guitarist from Korn! During my high school days I was a big fan of Korn. Brian “Head” Welch always stood out to me because of his awesomely funky hair. I remember shortly after my oldest son was born {in 2005} hearing that Brian had left Korn because he wanted to focus more on being a father to his beautiful daughter, and I was thrilled to hear he had become a Christian as well!

brian-head-welch

‘With My Eyes Wide Open’ is such a heart wrenching, beautiful, emotional book that basically takes you through Brian’s entire life following his salvation. As I mentioned he left Korn to take care of his daughter Jennae so the book focuses a lot on Brian and Jennae and the things that they went through, the ups and downs of each of their lives together and separately. It is so beautiful how God revealed his power by guiding them through all the things that they went through so faithful even when it was really painful…and it was.

20140723-REDMF-54I absolutely love how honest Brian was, he loves his daughter so much and it so very clear that he is wholeheartedly committed to Jesus. I also love the very end of the book where both he and Jennae wrote a letter to the reader. Both letters are so touching and heartfelt.

From the first chapter you just know so many lives are going to be changed through this book and his testimonies. Because of his willingness to be so opened and real the book really gives so many the opportunity to identify with the things that he and his daughter have gone through. Brian is a HUGE encouragement from meth junkie, getting drugs in the mail, getting high before he took his daughter to school to amazing follow of Jesus! Then God used him to save his beloved daughter!

This would be an excellent book for anyone in your life especially those who are Korn fans Christian or not. It’s so incredibly well written yet extremely easy to read!

Please take a moment and watch Brian’s I am second video you will be touched and moved by…it will make you cry its amazing!

I also love that the book has pages full of photos of both Brian and Jennae over the years AND on the back of the book has tons of praise from Nikki Sixx {Motley Crue}  Eric Metals, Alice Cooper, Scott Hamilton, David Ellefson {Megadeath} and Corey Taylor {Slipknot}

*Although I did receive this book for free to review I was not compensated for this post.  All thoughts + opinions are 100% my own.

My favorite uses for Peppermint Essential Oil

peppermint

Peppermint oil has so many uses, so is it any wonder that this oil is a staple in so many people’s homes including mine? Peppermint oil does so much more than just freshen your breath, it can….

  • Relieves Allergies
  • Relieves stomach-ache
  • Relieves Headaches
  • Relieves Neck/Back tension
  • Helps Reduce Fevers
  • Reduce PMS symptoms
  • Prevents and Relieves Heartburn
  • Helps with Nausea
  • Help with Indigestion
  • Helps Reduce Stress {I love to diffuse in the evening!}
  • Increases Concentration {I diffuse in the school room}
  • Helps relieve sunburns
  • Reduces Anxiety
  • Helps Curb Appetite
  • Helps Freshen Breath
  • And soooooo much more!

Some things to note about peppermint essential oil. This oil can absolutely be used topically however it is a very good idea to dilute it with a carrier oil such as Olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil or fractionated coconut oil. If you have sensitive skin I highly recommend diluting it quite a bit to prevent any burning or allergic reactions such as a rash. Also never use pure coconut oil meaning undiluted on any young children I personally use peppermint oil without a carrier oil but it gets really hot and it doesn’t burn so please be aware of this and make sure you dilute it a blot before applying it to any children.

Here are a few ways that my family regularly uses Peppermint Essential oil!

Sore Muscles:  Peppermint oil has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties so it can relieve pain and inflammation. I often use Peppermint oil on my husband after a long work day to soothe sore muscles and my mom uses it in her nightly routine because it calms muscle spasms \ muscle cramps.

  • Topically: massage 2-3 drops along with a carrier oil onto the sore area {be sure to keep the oil away from your eyes because it will burn…badly}

Headache: If you are prone to headaches like me Peppermint oil will become your best friend! The use of this oil can help lessen the additional symptoms that often come with a headache or migraine such as light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to noise.

  • Topically: massage 2-3 drops along with a carrier oil and rub on your temples, forehead, over the sinuses {be sure to keep the oil away from your eyes because it will burn…badly} also rub on the back of the neck and over shoulders.
  • Diffuse: 2-6 drops in a diffuser {this works great for me at bedtime or when I have to lay down because of a migraine.}

Colds/Congestion: Menthol in Peppermint oil can help so much with many different respiratory problems including nasal congestion, sinusitis, asthma, bronchitis and the common cold and cough. It is often included in chest rubs to help with congestion {psst you can make your own and I will be sharing a recipe as we get closer to the start of the new school year.

  • Topically: massage 2-3 drops along with a carrier oil and rub on chest and back. or drop into a humidifier to help clear sinus and lung congestion.
  • Diffuse: 2-6 drops in a diffuser as needed.
  • Steam it: Remember when you were a kid and your mom would have you sit with a towel over your head breathing the steam from a bowl of boiling water? This is the exact same thing but add 1-4 drops of Peppermint Essential oil  {your can also use Rosemary or Eucalyptus} Drape a towel over your head and breathe in the steam.

Stress: Because of the amazing uplifting and refreshing properties in Peppermint essential oil it is able to provide relief from stress, depression and mental exhaustion, it also helps with feeling anxious and restless.

  • Topically: Add a combination of peppermint {and lavender, geranium, bergamot or ylang ylang essential oils} to a warm bath the aroma with help relieve while it is absorbed through the skin.
  • Diffuse: 2-6 drops in a diffuser as needed {you can add the some of the other oils above as well.

Peppermint Essential oil shown is from Eden’s Garden and you can get yours here
