The Gabby Mom’s – April Mission: Eternal Encouragement Magazine

We Gab * We Giggle * We Glitter

For this months Mission with the The Gabby Mom’s, I was sent the latest edition of Eternal Encouragement Magazine formerly TEACH Magazine. What’s the Magazine’s vision? “Inspire Women to Become More Like Jesus Every Day.”

Psst, I am really embarrassed to tell you this but…although it’s been around for a while, this is the very first time I have read it! I wish I would have known what I was missing! God had a plan for April’s review for The Gabby Mom‘s

Let me say first off, I love the size of it. It is a small 5×7 about the size of a magazine folded in half! It is perfect for my busy life, I can put it in the baby bag or my purse and have it right there on hand when I have a little down time. But, don’t let this tiny magazine fool you, it’s size in no way reflects what is in it! It is jam packed full of wonderful articles that you’ll actually want to read! When was the last time you picked up a magazine and wanted to read every single article? Yeah, I can’t think of when either! You will with Eternal Encouragement Magazine!

This little magazine is broken down into three sections or departments as Eternal Encouragement calls them.

  • Godly Women
  • Godly Homemakers
  • Godly Mothers

Below each heading there is the page number and name of the article. This makes it very easy to find just want you need or are looking for!

“I had to admit it, my kids were right. See, they hadn’t said they didn’t get time to play. They said they didn’t get much time to play with me. There is a HUGE difference.”

-From: It Just “Donned” on me – The Life of a Homemaking Mom by Donna Venning

When did he get so big? This is a common statement between my husband and my self about our oldest son. He was just a baby and now he’s 6 and can read and write, he has ideas, likes and dislikes…my baby is a little man!

After reading this wonderful Article, I began to reflect on many different things:

Am I a mother who takes time? What is my focus? Do I clean first, play (with the kiddos) later?

How can I be a better Mommy? Elias – “Play with us more Mommy!!”

Mini Interview with my 6 year old son:

1. What is something that Mommy does every single day?

Answer: Work on the computer

2. How much does Mommy play with you and the twins?

Answer: A lot

3. What do you want Mommy to do more?

Answer: Play with us

4. What do you want Mommy to do less?
Answer: Stuff on the Computer

5. What kind of Mommy is your Mommy?
Answer: A good Mommy!

Well, there it is! What did I learn? My little man is growing up and I don’t want to miss time with him, because I have someone to email, or a article to write, a deadline…it’s not worth it and that’s that! Tonight we went on our nightly family walk to the park. When we got there we stopped at the baseball field and played baseball…actually played!! I’m a huge tomboy and I love sports, it took no effort on my part, I love the feel and the sound when the baseball and the bat collide! After baseball we headed to the play area, on the way there my husband and older son play tetherball, then off to the slide and swings…the twins love the slide! When it was time to start heading home Elias excitedly asked if I would like to play a quick game of tetherball, without thinking I said “no, not tonight.” He was very disappointed. I thought about – It Just “Donned” on me. Why’d I say no? Yes, I hate tetherball, but this is my child wanting to spend time with his Mommy! I quickly corrected my self and said “Yeah, Elias lets play tetherball!!” His back was to me when I said it. He turned around with the most excited look on his sweet little face! I can’t even begin to tell you how it made me feel. What did I learn tonight? No matter what the game, they are my children who won’t be children forever…and I’m gonna play!! Oh, and I actually enjoyed tetherball A LOT, maybe it was the company!

The Gabby Mom’s Question of the Week – March 7-11 2011!

Opened to anyone living in the US or Canada is welcome to enter (not just Gabby Moms) All of our March winners will receive a $5 Gift Card to Starbucks! Enter HERE!

This week’s question is:

What is the number one thing you do to refresh yourself, your kids and your homeschool mid-year?

My answer…
We homeschool through the year so we ‘refresh’ twice a year on average. Once right around now, when it seems like winter is going to last forever, and we are stuck inside. Something special that I like to do is have my 6 year old pick out a few new activity books! This past weekend we did just that. Elias was so excited! I have noticed over the last few months that he has a deep love for science, nature, and weather. So it was no surprise to when he chose WEATHER LAB and SCIENCE LAB from Silver Dolphin books! These books have 50 projects each and are TONS of fun!

Another Refresh time for us is summer, which is perfect because it always hits us right around our summer vacation. Last year we when to Glacier National park. He was able to learn about bears, deer, moose, mountains, water life and nature! He was able to see a Black bear up close, and see how big they really are. He got to see and touch the vast span of the mountains that God created. We were even able to play in the snow in the middle of July!! This year we are off to the Oregon Coast! We will be able to learn about sea life while playing at the beach! There is nothing more fun then learning while you play!

Other than these we often have a nature hike every few weeks during nice weather to keep things fun. In the winter, something as simple as the local childrens museum can refresh us!

Head over to The Gabby Mom’s and join in the fun!

The Gabby Mom’s – February Mission: Encouraging Moments

myspace layouts

We Gab * We Giggle * We Glitter

I want to be totally honest, I do not like Newsletters. I dislike e-Newsletters even more. When I found out that The Gabby Mom’s Feb. Mission would be to review Encouraging Moments the newsletter from Eternal Encouragement Magazine, I was um…less than thrilled. I found my self procrastinating, and making excuses on why I didn’t have time to read the…ugh…newsletter.

One night when the children were all sung in their beds, I decided to give the newsletter a go. I have to say, I REALLY enjoyed Encouraging Moments…A LOT!

I love that the first thing in Encouraging Moments I read was on Marriage! This year my husband Abraham and I will be celebrating 10 years of marriage!

Abe and I have been truly happily married all these years. But, 10 years later I have a heavy heart. When we got married it seemed like everyone we knew got married too. Within 5 years 50% had already divorced. Last year we were one of 4 couples still married. Sadly this year there are only 3 couples.

Lorrie wrote:

The differences between the successful marriage and unhappy one are:

living life “around” your disagreements

taking a “team” attitude toward compromise

loving in spite of differences

understanding and empathy for your husband’s position

knowing that quietly talking about differences can strengthen the relationship and improve intimacy

knowing that avoiding conflicts doesn’t make them go away

This is how my Husband and I have lived for the last 10 years. Before we got married it seemed our marriage was being tested, for lack of better word. Let me explain…

My parents had been married for 25 years. They had always had their problems, but I never thought they would get divorced. The day Abe and I were looking at the Church and meeting with the Pastor who would marry us I got a phone call. My mom was crying. My dad had left my mom for another woman and was moving to Texas. I was sad and angry. Abe was so wonderful. He was there for me when I pushed him away…and I did! “If my dad was a cheater what is to stop Abe from doing this to me?” I thought. I brought this before the LORD and was given peace. It would have been so easy for me to say “all men are cheaters, and I can’t marry you” and trust me there was a point when I wanted to. The Lord showed me how I was beginning to punishing Abe for something that he didn’t do. I realized that I was allowing my hurt inflicted by my dad, to hinder my own relationship and how truly unhealthy it was.

Our Wedding day came and went, my dad walked me down the aisle, then quickly moved to Texas and I haven’t seen him since and very rearly speak to him. That hurts, but my marriage is not paying for something that he did.

Ok, so back to the ‘successful marriage’ – To be honest when I read the points Lorrie has listed (above) I laughed out loud…not because they are funny, but because it was like she take my own thoughts and and looking at my marriage when she wrote them!

There are two points that really stood out to me:

taking a “team” attitude toward compromise…

We actually refer to our family as “team wood” It seems silly, but there is a deep reason behind it, and not just the fact that we are HUGE Football fans. We are one before the LORD the ultimate Head Coach, and became one in his presents 10 years ago. However, just because we are one that does not mean that we think and do things exactly alike…I mean come on we are a man and a woman! Referring to us as “team wood” reminds us of how a team will totally fall apart if the players are doing what they want and not considering the team best interest. In football the quarterback’s job is to keep everything going, to read the situation and to know how to get the job done, sure the other players might think they have a better way, but they are a team and listen to their captain. It is the same in our marriage and family. Abe my quarterback.

understanding and empathy for your husband’s position…

Many years ago my Abe and I made the decision that I would be a stay at home mom when we had children. This was one of the best decisions we have made. I get to spend everyday with our kids and watch them grow. Recently, the twins have become…toddlers, getting into everything. A few months ago I had one VERY HIGH stress afternoon. Abe arrived home that day, and as soon as I saw him I started telling him about my horrible day, how this had happened and how that had happened. He just stared at me. Truthfully I got mad at him because he wasn’t responding. Later, I asked him “what was the deal, why don’t you care” he responded “I do care.”  After a long talk, I realized that I was only focused on my day, what was going on with me…I didn’t even realize that he had worked a 10 hour day, and had only had a few hours of sleep. He does all this for me, for our kids, for us. Now, we talk about his day, I listen to the feelings that he needs to get out, the high stress that he has everyday. I need to make time for him, and I have!!

Encouraging Moments is full of all kinds of great things, like the ‘On Facebook this Week’ if you don’t already like Eternal Encouragement here is the link. In addition to that there is ‘Chick Flicks for Mom’

“Few things make a mountain out of a molehill more often than communication does. Understand how your husband wants to hear a story and how it may be just the opposite of how you like to tell it.” Be sure to visit and watch a great video!

However, it was something at the very bottom of Encouraging Moments that made me love it.

Timely Tip: Marriage Matters – Ties That Bind by Kimberly Lacey

A wonderful article that everyone should read. I felt as if was personally written for me! But the best part of all was after the article. The ‘Praying for our Husbands: 31 day plan’ is now printed out, sitting on my counter top so every time I walk toward the kitchen it catches my eye!

Praying for our Husbands it 31 verses – one verse for each day. As wives we need to be praying for our husbands, our providers, our quarterbacks daily! This is the perfect plan for busy mom’s and wives. After reading the verse for each day, I am able to reflected on the verse and what it means to me, thus filling the day with prayers for my quarterback!

A few of my favorites so far from Praying for our Husbands: 31 day Plan –

Day 8:

“That the LORD might give him wisdom to lead his family physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually.” Ephesians 1:17-19

Day 14:

“That he might make me holy, cleansing me by the washing with water through the word.” Ephesians 5:26

The Gabby Mom’s – January Mission: True Treasures

myspace layouts

We Gab * We Giggle * We Glitter

Are you familiar with Lorrie Flem and TEACH Magazine (now called Eternal Encouragement)? If you are homeschooling you will want to!! A few years ago a wonderful friend shared Lorrie with me and I have been hooked ever since.  This year I have been given the opportunity to be part of her new The Gabby Moms, I’m so thrilled to be apart of this amazing group of women! My “mission” this January is to share a new book she’s published will all my friends.

True Treasures is an amazing collection of the best of the best articles from the last ten years of TEACH Magazine on topics relating to homemaking, moms, marriage and parenting.

“By wisdom a house is built, and through understanding it is established; Through knowledge it’s rooms are filled with rare and beautiful treasures.” Proverbs 24: 3-4

True Treasures is divided into 6 sections, each one full of inspiring ideas, wisdom from the hearts of women, and encouragement to help you be a better wife, mother, and homemaker.

• Jewels That Make the Heart Sparkle
• Marriages Made of Solid Gold
• Parenting Pearls: Practical and Priceless
• Homemaking That Dazzles Like Diamonds
• Homeschooling Nuggets of Wisdom
• Godly Living That Glitters

Weather you have 5 minutes or two hours, you can benefit from the wonderful encouragement that True Treasures has to offer: such as devotional thoughts, practical tips, encouragement, and inspiration on every page. Every time I picked up the book I was drawn to the marriage and parenting sections. It was wonderful to read and know that their are other Mom’s and Wives going through the same things as I am going through!

While reading in the section Parenting Pearls: Practical and Priceless, I found my self laughing out loud (I will be adding the whining chair from page 57) In Addition I was also really convicted. This caused me to step back and look at my parenting thus far.

As a child, I had a dream. My true hearts desire was to become a Wife to a wonderful man…who I was sure would be Jordan from New Kids on the Block! In addition I wanted have Children and stay at home with them and homeschooling them, just like my mother stayed home and homeschooled me. I didn’t know what the Lord had planned for me, but I knew that that was who I was going to be, a wonderful wife, the best mother, and a great teacher.

Fast forward 20+ years…

Earlier this month my oldest son turned 6. He is a wonderful little boy. Now, he’s 6. With this ‘new’ big boy age there have been a lot new things, losing more teeth, eating more…and…More attitude. Suddenly he is 16, I don’t know what has happened, have I done something wrong? He started complaining about everything, bickering with his younger siblings, and testing every single boundary about 6 months ago.  Bedtime became an unglued mess. I feel like I am losing my patience, I hate yelling but I do, I dislike the kind of Mommy I fear I am becoming.

While seeking the Lord things have become very clear. The Lord has showed me that I have been spending so much time trying to ‘Change’ my 6 year old that I have lost sight of the fact that I need to be the one to change. How can I raise a Christian man, when I am totally unglued? Which became abundantly apparent when I over heard my Children playing together. It was like a ton of bricks on my shoulders, Elias was acting like me. My Heart sunk, ‘is this really who I have become?’ I thought to my self. After spending some much needed time with the Lord, I found my boy and had a much needed talk. I apologized to my precious little boy. How was he supposed to meet these expectation set before him when I wasn’t doing my job and guiding him? Actions truly do speak louder than words don’t them?

While Seeking the Lord, I asked to him to show me where I need to change and boy did he! Spending more time with Jesus was a big lesson I had to learn. I’ll be honest, life gets hectic with kids crying, yelling, asking for this, asking for that. Unfortunately, it’s me who gets lost, my relationship with Jesus gets put on hold. And, for what? So I can lose my patience? I know that is NOT what God wants.

Jesus is working me and doing some really amazing things. I prayed for the Lord to change me. Before, I was praying like this “Lord, what have I done, why have things be so hard, please help things get better. Amen.” While reading in Philippians something stuck out at me. ‘am I praying for the right things?’

Philippians 4:6 tells us: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

Over the past few months my prayers have become more like this ” Lord, please help me train my children in a way that is pleasing to you, guide me to be the Mother you want me to be. Please, Lord help me also become the wife that you created me to be…”

Proverbs 2:6 reads: “For the LORD gives wisdom;
from his mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

My life is never too hectic to spend time with my heavenly Father. I have a fire inside me for the Lord that I have not had in quite sometime and it feels WONDERFUL! I have been so surprised that the amount of patience I have acquired through the Lord.  Like today for instance, standing in the middle of my Living Room, I look around and think to myself, ‘it looks like I run an in home daycare with 30 kids.’ I’m not mad or upset; I just laugh and thank God for the wonderful gift of getting to spend everyday with my wonderful Children. The sit down on the floor and play too!

Proverbs 24:3-4 “By wisdom a house is built,
and through understanding it is established;
through knowledge its rooms are filled
with rare and beautiful treasures.”

Living everyday with joy and happiness has left my children living everyday with joy and happiness. Being a mommy is more that just talking at your children, being a mother is guiding your children in more than just word but by actions! My son sees me spending time with the Lord everyday, because of this he spends his own time with Lord, praying for friends and family! He recently was drawing and so excited to show me what he had drawn. “It me mommy, and that is Jesus living in my heart!” With tears in my eyes and warmth in my heart I gave my little guy a squeeze!

Psalm 118:24 “The LORD has done it this very day;
let us rejoice today and be glad. “

Read Excerpts from True Treasures HERE!

At the end of the Parenting section there is a page entitled ‘Bible verses to Pray for your children’ (page 53) No matter how many times I opened the book, with out fail I found my self on that page, reading the verses over and over. These verses are what encouraged and pushed me into this ‘art’ project!

Elias age 6
Simon age 16 months
Gabbi age 16 months

I made a these photos of my children and added a bible verse to each. These photos will be displayed over our bed in our master bedroom. A bright reminder that these three little people are a wonderful gift, given from the Most High.

“But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear him, and his righteousness with their children’s children” Psalm 103:17
