Hemp Hearts by Manitoba Harvest AND Giveaway!!!

logoToday I’m sharing Manitoba Harvest Hemp Hearts! When I think hemp I cannot help but go back to my Jr. high years {if you were in junior high or high school in the early 90s you probably know exactly what I’m about to say :)} remember the hemp necklaces and bracelets? It was the cool “new” friendship bracelets. I had so many cool hemp choker necklaces and bracelets…my mom probably still has a few in my old bedroom! It was just so cool to rock some hemp necklaces or bracelets! OK OK I digress, let’s get back on track!

This was my very first product by Manitoba Harvest. I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I heard that I would be getting Hemp Hearts. I didn’t know much about Manitoba Harvest or Hemp Hearts, so I set out to find out more! After a little research I discovered that Manitoba is the largest hemp foods manufacturer…did you know that? Do you know they even have their very own line of hemp foods.

Let’s talk Hemp:

What is hemp you ask? Simply put, hemp is a super plant! 

Food, clothing, rope, paper, building materials, animal bedding/herd, plastic, paint, fuel – the list of hemp applications goes go on and on. We like to call hemp the “green buffalo” as every part of the plant can be used. Hemp that is grown in Western Canada is primarily used for hemp foods. At the top part of the hemp plant you will find the hard hemp seed. This small seed “seeds” nutritiously delicious products like Hemp Hearts, hemp protein powder, and hemp oil.

Hemp has been around for centuries and has played an instrumental role in shaping our continent. Settlers were given free land if they grew hemp. The Declaration of Independence draft was written on hemp paper. Hemp materials were used in numerous war efforts. Hemp was integrating into modern life until it was ‘temporarily’ banned due to misconceptions. Yes, hemp is a species of Cannabis sativa. No, hemp is not the same as marijuana.

At first glance hemp hearts look a lot like uncooked quinoa or maybe couscous, but they are definitely something all their own!

The taste:
Hemp Hearts taste great! I actually find the slightly nutty taste very similar to red quinoa. They have a very unique (in a good way) taste that compliments other tastes and flavors. I have yet to find something they don’t got good with.

How to use Hemp Hearts:
Hemp Hearts are very easy to use! I like to sprinkle Hemp Hearts on salads and cereal and the kids love them sprinkled on fruit and yogurt! I also love adding hemp hearts to smoothies and you the added bonus protein and omegas that these awesome little things are packed full of!

Fun Fact: Hemp Hearts have more protein and Omega’s and less carbs and then favorite other seeds such as Chia or flax.

A Favorite Recipe:

First of all I want to apologize I did not get pictures of this delicious turkey burger that I’m going to tell you about and I’m so sorry for that, usually I’m so good about getting pictures but I have just been off my game without a lot of stuff going on in her family so again I apologize guys! Now, onto the turkey burger!

For years I have made this delicious turkey burger:

I mix together

Extra Lean Ground Turkey

Dijon Mustard

Mango Chutney

Greek Yogurt

Then form patties and grill {be sure you use non stick or foil because these burgers tend to fall apart somewhat easy}

With just these few ingredients these burgers are SO good, but a few weeks ago I decided to toss in a couple of tablespoons of Hemp Hearts and it added such a delicious dynamic to taste of these burgers, I just can’t even explain it other than it gave a delicious nutty taste! Other meals Hemp Hearts have been delicious in or on: Sprinkled on our favorite Steak and Veggie stew {awesome for fall!}, oatmeal with fruit,  mashed sweet potatoes oh and sprinkled on top of peanut butter banana toast…DELICIOUS! Hemp Hearts add so much to the taste but more than that they add so much nutrition!

Final thoughts!

Ready to Eat Clean?

If you spend any time on social media or the internet you probably have been seeing quite a few “buzz words/subjects” swirling around. “Clean Eating” has been one of the top subjects my readers are emailing me about! Lots of questions are being asked, but the most common are “What is Clean Eating?” and “What do I buy?” So, let’s focus on those! What is Clean Eating? Clean Eating is basically eating as natural and whole as possible. Clean Eating stresses healthy, whole, unprocessed foods. It sound super easy, however it can end up being a little overwhelming and confusing when you are bombarded by processed foods down ever isle at the grocery store. The goal of clean eating is to remove all processed foods, foods with extra additives and chemicals, and refined foods from you diet. Clean eating is not a diet it’s actually a lifestyle! Tips for getting started with a Clean Eating Life Style:

  • Eat whole, natural foods and stay away from processed foods.

This basically means if it’s in a bag, box, can or package you don’t want it {with the exception of bagged fresh veggies} When in doubt don’t go down the inside isles in the grocery store since they are chalked full of processed foods. I personally like to stick to the produce section or better yet shop at a local farmers market or farm.

  • Eat unrefined foods rather than refined foods.

Clean sugars include honey, maple syrup, and dehydrated sugar cane juice.

  • Eat protein, carbohydrates and fat at every meal.

Protein is very important when it comes to muscle-building, and it can also help curb your appetite. When eaten throughout the day, it keeps us feeling full longer.

  • Eat at home NOT out.

This way you know all ingredients you are using , where they are from and the exact amount of calories you are consuming.

  • Remember – Don’t drink your calories.

High calorie drinks such as soda pop can add an extra staggering 500 calories a day!  Remember to ALWAYS choose water first! Now, I know there are a lot of you out there that are not big water drinkers, have no fear I have an easy and oh so yummy alternative…Infused water, this is when you add fresh fruits and veggies to your water and let it sit over night in your fridge! Some of my most favorite infused waters are: Fresh Cucumber and Mint {we grow our own spearmint}, Fresh Strawberry, Peach and  Blueberry! There are tons of other options and believe me every single one is delicious!  Other clean drinks include unsweetened tea, I love this option for both iced and hot, skim milk and unsweetened almond milk {my personal favorite}  A few Clean Eating “Rules”

  • Eat your meals
  • Raw
  • Grilled
  • Baked
  • Steamed
  • Fill at least half your plate with veggies
  • Eat fruit(s) for dessert {In the summer time I like to make fruit smoothies for dessert – frozen fruit and greek yogurt blended until creamy! my kiddos LOVE it!}

Lastly, Drink a gallon of water per day! I know this may seem a little daunting but I promise it doesn’t have to be. A very easy way to achieve this goal is by simply filling a gallon pitcher with water and putting it in the fridge the night before then in the morning start filling you glass. You will be surprised at how quickly that gallon disappears. Confused about what to buy? Clean Eating can be a little overwhelming and confusing, but it doesn’t have to be. Below I have shared our shopping list for you to print and/or save in ibooks, kindle ect.! I have it broken into categories to make your grocery shopping easy peasy! Goals!

This week #SweatPink asks: “What are your current fitness and healthy living goals? What’s your strategy for staying on track with achieving your goals?”

This couldn’t have come at a more perfect time, with the season change quickly approaching {where I live at least} and the face that I’m currently battling a significant slipped and bulging disc that is pinching a nerve in my back {do to a serious fall} and lot of taking it easy {Bummer!} This seems like a perfect time to set some new goals! Hmmm, you know what? Some time a little reevaluation is exactly what you need to get motivated!

My Current Fitness & Healthy Living Goals

  • Heal & find workouts that I can do with my injury:

Because I really have to take it easy on my upper back and shoulder I’ve really been focusing a lot on lower body workouts, walking and running with my husband!  I have been doing Zumba and honestly a whole lot of Pinterest searching for lower body workouts that will be gentle on my back, that will make me sweat, and give me the cardio I’m looking for. Let’s talk ZUMBA!!! Honestly guys, if you are feeling down, discouraged or just not motivated I HIGHLY recommend Zumba! It’s so much fun, gives an awesome cardio workout and you can do it at home when ever you want! For me personally there is a huge plus, even with my injury I can still ZUUUMMMBBBAAA! Here are some of my favorite YouTube videos all from CLUB FITz…my personal fave! These 6 videos can act as a super fun and intense cardio workout {the first video is a slower warm up video. I end with it again or stretches}

I dare you not to have fun and feel ready to conquer anything the days throws at you after doing one or all of these Zumba routines! I know I do injury and all!

  • Give my body the right Fuel:

I have recently really gotten back on track with my healthy eating goals! YAY! A few months ago I kind of slipped off my low-carb eating…ugh…yes I paid the penalty and gained back some weight. I was extremely disappointed {even thought it was my own fault} so my husband and I reassessed our eating and realized we needed to get back to our low-carb lifestyle and hit it hard! I have already seen results {we were on vacation and ate like crap but I didn’t gain at all!} I feel so much better, I have so much more energy and I know it’s because of my low carb lifestyle!

One of the ways that my husband and I have achieved our low-carb lifestyle is honestly by using the entire Atkins line! I have shared before how much I love the Atkins so I won’t go on and on about it! See my posts about Atkins HERE!

  • See my progress: 

Keeping track of my fitness, weightloss and eating is really important for me. There is just something about writing it down that makes me feel more accomplished! For this I have been using a few different printable that I created months ago for my readers!

  • Get more sleep:

This remains an ongoing struggle for me.  I aim to be in bed by 10:30/11. However I have a really bad habit of  “oops I forgot” until oh 11pm. My goal is to delegate my “day” time better and learn that I DO NOT have to do something I forgot to do during the day….it CAN wait. It will be difficult but I am determined to get the sleep I need and my family needs me to get!

Since a new season it about to start {well at least where I live ;)} Of course I headed over and pursued prAna‘s website and very quickly I realized my wish list was pretty big! This week Sweat Pink and Fit Approach are partnering up with prAna to help us get closer to our goal of #1MillionMinutes!

Yay!! I’m so excited for the next two weeks of #LiveInPrAna and to be starting today off with a fun mad lib!

I’m so excited to rack up more minutes towards our awesome goal of reaching 1 million minutes this summer!  While most of my sweat has come from hiking and playing outside with the kids {trampoline, swimming and football mostly} , I have also done quite a bit of walking {a 5k every night with my hubby!!}

To motivate myself to get from homeschooling the kids to running with my hubby and through my day,  I always have to be armed with water and protein snacks. I find that the more hydrated and alert that I am, the more determined and successful I am at achieving my goals.

Since staying on track requires so much focus and energy, I think it’s important that I treat myself! Killer Kettlebell WOD

This has been my favorite Kettlebell WOD {workout of the day} for a while now!

Heres a few things before you get started:

  • If you are new to Kettlebells then start out with a lighter weight {5-10 lbs} you can always go heavier once you have gotten used to the lighter bell.
  • Use the weight that is right for you. Don’t get over zealous and use a weight that is heavier that you are used to, work up to a heavier weight.

Like most of my workouts this can be done pretty much anywhere! Its a fairly quick yet butt kicking WOD!
