2014-2015 Curriculum {4th/5th & K/1st}

CurricChoicesI cannot believe that summer is almost over! This year we decide to take the summer off. There was just so much going on, including my moms 70th, my grandfather’s 98th {and subsequent illness that has us waiting to get the call that he has gone to be with the Lord} The biggest reason we decided to take off the summer is because of my husbands summer term {I mentioned in the past he is currently working towards his Bachelors/MBA} We wanted to make sure we got as much family time as possible before the Fall/Winter semester starts for him {next week} Ahhh I digress…lets talk Curriculum!

We are really excited for the 2014/2015 School year to begin! As always I’ve selected a very eclectic homeschool Curriculum {meaning I don’t strictly do a curriculum in a box, Classical, or  Charlotte Mason. I fall in the category of, well…eclectic!} If I told you that all of our school curriculum has been selected and we know exactly what we’re going to do for every single subject, well…I would be lying to you. The reason being that I’m still trying to decide between a couple different things, so look for a more in-depth ‘curriculum by grade’ post in September!

All Together {as a Family}:

Our family is very spoiled, my husband’s office is downstairs! He works from home 100% of the time, which means that he is very involved with our children’s homeschooling!

My husband and I want to instill faith, humility, honor and character in our children. Here are some of the resources we will be using to accomplish this:

Along with all of our Bible time together we will also together do:

4th/5th Grade: {Boy}

As usual Elias will be participating in our  Thursday ‘co-op’ throughout the school year! Classes he will be taking include Archery, Pottery, Leatherworking, Woodworking & Theater!

*Please note Elias is doing a mixture of 4th & 5th grade this year to ensure he is working at his level for him! These are all the ‘main’ books for the subjects we have a many ‘filler’ resources. I’m planning to having a large post coming up in late September about some of my favorite resources.

cute-stars

Kindergarten/1st: {Boy & Girl}

I would really like to find a local “school age” play group. I’m not interest in a co-op for the twins. We shall see what happens.

* Please note that the twins will be working at their paces, so if they don’t accomplish anything in for ‘first grade’ that’s absolutely okay! If they’re anything like their brother they were all in excel in certain subjects, I just wanted to be prepared.

My husband and I also have some really fun family field trips and activities planned for the school year!

Coming Soon! {Back to School Edition}

  • ‘Back to School’ Reviews and Giveaways
  • Just for you Mom: Homeschool Mom’s Bible Giveaway

Intentional Marriage | A 31 Day Devotional | The Ultimate Homemaking Bundle

Affiliate Links are used in this post. Thank you for supporting The Life in Bloom

UHB

One of the coolest perks about being an affiliate for the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle is getting my hands on some of the book included early! Over the next few days I will be sharing some of my favorite ebooks and programs that are apart of the amazing bundle! Intentional Marriage: the art of loving your husband  {a 31 day devotional} is one of the fabulous books in the “Marriage” section of the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle!

image

In the introduction Crystal says “the biggest threat to marriages in our modern world is neglect. When we stop trying, we start drifting apart.” I have to wholeheartedly agree, once you’ve been married for any length of time it starts becoming comfortable you get caught up in the busyness of life you start only thinking about yourself and sadly we often become thoughtless.Over the last 14 years my husband and I have strived to not allow the busyness of life to take control and pettiness of personal bad habits (in both my husband and myself) but the thing is life is busy and it’s easy to sink into that. Because it is so easy to get consumed by life you have to make every day intentional before you find yourself right in the middle of marriage in crisis. My husband and I have watched countless marriages fall apart because of more than just drifting apart but because they just stopped caring, they stopped being intentional in their marriages in their lives together. They had reached crisis and stopped wanting to be together. I think that it’s a sad reality that this is so very common in this current  world that were part of, but it is and we have to be proactive!

Let’s talk about intentional marriage | 31 day devotional! Crystal Brothers did an awesome job putting this together!!

There are 31 different topics covered in the devotional, including:

  • Cooking your husbands favorite food
  • Five things you love about your husband
  • Date night
  • Be his support
  • Speak only what is helpful assure him of your devotion
  • and more

Each day is put together in such a way that is very easily to accomplish a matter how busy you are. There are four parts to each day

For example Day 15 is “Thank God for him”

  1. A Bible verse Philippians 1:3  “I think my God in all my remembrance of you,”
  2. 2-4 paragraphs discussing what it means to “Thank God for him” What does this mean? How do we do it? Practical tip on how to accomplish said task.
  3. A daily challenge, for this particular day the challenge is “give thanks for your husband every time you think of him having an attitude of things will change your actions towards him”
  4. Finally there is a section of “Daily Challenge” reflection that Crystal has provided on each page. There are number of lines to write some reflection about “today’s challenge” for example you can answer questions like: did today’s challenge go today did it go better-than-expected? did today’s challenge go worse than expected? depending on each days particular challenge you will have different question to reflect on and respond to. If you are like me you will end up doing this section at the end of the day.

I really like the way this devotional is put together! There’s not too much, there’s not too little, it’s absolutely perfect! No matter how much time you have or don’t have, you can do this Devo! I found that no matter how many activities we have each day or how many things I have to do I always have the time I need to read each day, do the days challenge or prepare for it, and spend time praying for my husband. It has to be intentional so I recommend doing it first thing in the morning depending on your situation it might before work, before the kids get up, or like me when the kids are having breakfast. Set a time and stick to it {as best you can}

Besides the fact that this is just an altogether wonderful devotional I love what’s at the end of the book…awesome resources like:

  • 101 ways to bless your husband
  • 101+ free/cheap date night ideas
  • 101+ conversation starters

I like to add to each day the time to pray and write out a prayer for your husband. We are all different, were all going through different things, each of our husbands are going through different things. I would highly suggest taking the time to really pray for your husband!  Pray the things that he’s going through both big and small, any issues that you are having with each other, family, friends {ect.} and lastly, that God will help you be the wife that he has created you to be for your husband.

I hope you grab up the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle and enjoy the Intentional Marriage Devotional as much as I did! As a reminder this bundle is a one time offer, once it’s gone, it’s gone!!!! There’s only 5 days left!

Keep an eye out tomorrow for more of My Favorite ebooks from the Ultimate Homemaking Bundle!

Encouraging Little Readers!

anchoracademy_edited-2

For many of us we have one or more children embarking on the journey to become a reader!! YAY!! I love to read and I want my children to have the same love for it as I do! I’m sure you feel the same way too! My oldest son is well on his way to being a reader just like me…you know the ones who read a novel in a day or two because they can’t put it down? Yeah, thats me! I read the entire “Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants” in 2 1/2 days!

Here are some great and fun reading tips…it doesn’t matter if your child is at a very basic level or if they are well on their way to chapter books, these are still great to implement!

At Home:

Turn off everything…the TV’s, iPads, ipods, radios…anything that can be distracting to your little reader! Your child will begin to learn that when it is quiet it is time to read! Be sure that you are using book that at your child’s level. ipick

“I Pick” Wall Art Download

{I would highly recommend printing on cardstock and laminating after they have been cut to make them last!}

Designate a time EVERYday as reading time! Morning, noon or night! It doesn’t matter. For our home it is the afternoon for about an hour. Sometimes my son wants to read to me and other times he wants to read by himself. He must read something from the bible {His favorite book to read!} ((Heartmelting)) Then he may read any of his books. Currently his big favorite is THE CLONE WARS!

Check out some great Literacy Apps HERE! Reading Aloud Tips:

Reading aloud should be fun and interactive.  Ask your child questions during the book, like “what do you think will happen next” and make personal connections, “remember when,” that create a context for reading.  This sets your child up for success—even adults need to understand the context of reading materials in magazines and newspaper articles.
Laying groundwork for future independent reading is done when you first read aloud to your children: pause to confirm and revise predictions, ask questions and make connections.  This teaches your child that understanding text is a process that occurs before, during and after reading.

Before Reading
Choose books you or your child can get excited about reading.  There are so many books out there, don’t spend time reading ones you won’t enjoy!

  • If you haven’t read the book already, scan it to get a sense of it before you start reading aloud.
  • Plan an introduction—find links to personal experiences.
  • Introduce the title, author, and illustrator.

During Reading
Read with fluency and expression.  Children need to hear changes in your voice to indicate when you are reading dialogue. Vary your pace, too. Slow down to build up suspense and speed up during exciting scenes.

  • Hold the books so your child can see the illustrations.
  • Try to establish frequent eye contact with your child.
  • Invite your child to question and comment but keep it focused on the story.
  • Explain words and ideas you think your child might not understand.

After Reading
Sometimes a book will pique curiosity and lead to questions and conversation afterwards, sometimes not.  It’s ok either way!

  • Allow time for discussion
  • Encourage various levels of response with questions
  • Retell the story or reread it to enhance comprehension.

Reading aloud is a great time to enjoy books together.  The increased vocabulary, correct grammar and comprehension will come naturally.  Soon enough, it will be your child’s turn to say “all by myself” and read these books to you.  Then, it will be the chapter books and “just one more chapter before I go to bed, please?”  Way to go mom and dad, you’re building a strong foundation of readers who WANT to read when YOU read aloud today.

Fun Idea Child Reading:
