My favorite uses for Peppermint Essential Oil

peppermint

Peppermint oil has so many uses, so is it any wonder that this oil is a staple in so many people’s homes including mine? Peppermint oil does so much more than just freshen your breath, it can….

  • Relieves Allergies
  • Relieves stomach-ache
  • Relieves Headaches
  • Relieves Neck/Back tension
  • Helps Reduce Fevers
  • Reduce PMS symptoms
  • Prevents and Relieves Heartburn
  • Helps with Nausea
  • Help with Indigestion
  • Helps Reduce Stress {I love to diffuse in the evening!}
  • Increases Concentration {I diffuse in the school room}
  • Helps relieve sunburns
  • Reduces Anxiety
  • Helps Curb Appetite
  • Helps Freshen Breath
  • And soooooo much more!

Some things to note about peppermint essential oil. This oil can absolutely be used topically however it is a very good idea to dilute it with a carrier oil such as Olive oil, coconut oil, almond oil or fractionated coconut oil. If you have sensitive skin I highly recommend diluting it quite a bit to prevent any burning or allergic reactions such as a rash. Also never use pure coconut oil meaning undiluted on any young children I personally use peppermint oil without a carrier oil but it gets really hot and it doesn’t burn so please be aware of this and make sure you dilute it a blot before applying it to any children.

Here are a few ways that my family regularly uses Peppermint Essential oil!

Sore Muscles:  Peppermint oil has analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties so it can relieve pain and inflammation. I often use Peppermint oil on my husband after a long work day to soothe sore muscles and my mom uses it in her nightly routine because it calms muscle spasms \ muscle cramps.

  • Topically: massage 2-3 drops along with a carrier oil onto the sore area {be sure to keep the oil away from your eyes because it will burn…badly}

Headache: If you are prone to headaches like me Peppermint oil will become your best friend! The use of this oil can help lessen the additional symptoms that often come with a headache or migraine such as light sensitivity, nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to noise.

  • Topically: massage 2-3 drops along with a carrier oil and rub on your temples, forehead, over the sinuses {be sure to keep the oil away from your eyes because it will burn…badly} also rub on the back of the neck and over shoulders.
  • Diffuse: 2-6 drops in a diffuser {this works great for me at bedtime or when I have to lay down because of a migraine.}

Colds/Congestion: Menthol in Peppermint oil can help so much with many different respiratory problems including nasal congestion, sinusitis, asthma, bronchitis and the common cold and cough. It is often included in chest rubs to help with congestion {psst you can make your own and I will be sharing a recipe as we get closer to the start of the new school year.

  • Topically: massage 2-3 drops along with a carrier oil and rub on chest and back. or drop into a humidifier to help clear sinus and lung congestion.
  • Diffuse: 2-6 drops in a diffuser as needed.
  • Steam it: Remember when you were a kid and your mom would have you sit with a towel over your head breathing the steam from a bowl of boiling water? This is the exact same thing but add 1-4 drops of Peppermint Essential oil  {your can also use Rosemary or Eucalyptus} Drape a towel over your head and breathe in the steam.

Stress: Because of the amazing uplifting and refreshing properties in Peppermint essential oil it is able to provide relief from stress, depression and mental exhaustion, it also helps with feeling anxious and restless.

  • Topically: Add a combination of peppermint {and lavender, geranium, bergamot or ylang ylang essential oils} to a warm bath the aroma with help relieve while it is absorbed through the skin.
  • Diffuse: 2-6 drops in a diffuser as needed {you can add the some of the other oils above as well.

Don’t EVER leave home without your Lavender essential oil!

3575I absolutely LOVE Lavender for so many different reasons! After this week Lavender will now and forever more be my go to first aid oil!

This past weekend my family and I spent our weekend like any other summer weekend…at the lake {My mom lives on a local lake}

We arrived at the beach and unloaded our umbrella, chairs, blanket and towels. The kids were very excited to start swimming and immediately jumped in! My ears were filled with the sweet sounds of  “mommy look at me” & “mommy I’m going under water!” Then those sweet voices were broken by Simon’s {he twin} blood curdling scream of pain! “My toe! it HURTS!” was all we could make out! I grabbed him up out of the foot of water he was standing in and we stunned and horrified at his food gushing blood! He toe was cut opened…and DEEP…there was too much blood to see if it went to the bone! We quickly wrapped and applied pressure while my husband ran to get our medical kit. As he ran past a family near by the woman hurried to her car with him…turns out she was an RN!!! What were the chances! They both arrived back to Simon and me and we accessed his toe…it was bad…After cleaning his wound and adding 2 drops of {neat} lavender we wrapped it tightly to stop the bleeding, and headed home…fully expecting that we would be heading to urgent care for stitches.

toeHere are some pictures of the progression of Simons toe. {* please note that I made the decision not to post the picture of his toe right after it happened it is very gory}

When we arrived home Simon was in a really good mood, which made the redressing of his wound very easy {he was nervous he was going to see blood 😦 } my husband and I were both jaw dropped stunned at what we saw under the original gauze… Not only had the horrible profuse bleeding stopped but the wound was almost totally sealed up!!!! What in the world? How did this happen? My husband and I both looked each other and smiled at the same time said “lavender” Being married to the most accident prone man I know, we knew that this was not “normal”!! Wounds like that DON’T look like this within an hour! But, heck we were happy! I honestly think if we would’ve taken him to the urgent care they would’ve looked at us like we were the biggest freaks and not believed that the wound had been so deep and so gaping!

So why did the lavender work? Well, it’s because lavender is a natural antiseptic! In the past we would use antibacterial ointment or something of that nature. I have two little boys, an accident prone little girl and I’m married to an extremely accident prone man! I have seen my fair share of cuts, scrapes, gaping wounds and I’ve got to tell you, I have never in the past 15 years used anything that has stopped the bleeding and “healed” as quickly and painlessly as the Lavender oil did! I know this from experience in gaping wounds, when our oldest was about 11 months old when he fell and he cut his head open, it was a nasty gaping wound! It took it weeks to heal even with stitches. The wound that Simon got on his toe was WAY worse than our eldest head!

Oh, and by the way what cut his toe was a horrible giant jagged rock that somebody had thrown in the shallow swimming area. When I found it I actually thought it was a broken wine bottle that somebody had stuck down in the sand because it was so sharp!

So the moral of my story? Like I said before, don’t ever leave home without your lavender essential oil, you never know what could happen and when you’re going to need it!

And… Please check the swimming area before you send your kids into a lake! I never would’ve expected this rock to do such horrible amount of damage!

Do you  love your Lavender?

I think there’s something in this water…

Spiked

Happy Friday and Happy Independence Day! I hope everyone has a ton of fun plans to celebrate today! I know we do 🙂

Before we all head off to do our fun Fourth of July activities, I wanted to share with you a fun way to use your Citrus Essential Oils!

3074In our house were all about hydration, especially in the summertime! Usually we feel like we’re the weird family with the weird kids…when we go over somebody’s house for dinner or a birthday party our kids are the ones who ask for ice water. They would pick water over any beverage, any day, any season! My husband and I love this. Here’s the thing though, I know a lot of people who don’t like water. This is a totally new concept to me because I love water SO much! By simply adding Young Living essential oils to you water, that dislike for the taste of water will disappear!

I’m sure this will shock all of you but our family loves adding Young Living Essential Oils to our water! You just won’t believe how delicious it is! {*When ingesting essential oils it is very important that you use “100% therapeutic grade essential oils” for that reason this recommendation ONLY pertains to Young Living Essential Oils}

Our favorite oils to “Spike” our water with

  • Grapefruit
  • Lime
  • Lemon
  • Orange
  • Tangerine
  • Citrus fresh
  • {Peppermint} although not a citrus it is unbelievably refreshing

How to “Spike” a glass of water? It’s easy! Just add a few drops of the Citrus oil of your choice to a glass of water! *remember when it comes to essential oils a little goes a long way! If you want a little bit of a stronger taste add a drop more! The amount you add with probably differ from your spouse or friends because we all have different tastes. For example I like to add 4 drops of Grapefruit essential oil to my water, my hubby prefers 1-2. I would highly recommend starting with 2 drops then going from there! {Tip: If you add too much citrus oil and the taste is too strong fear not…simply transfer to a larger glass and add some more water!}

*Do you struggle with anxiety issues, tummy/intestinal issues or fluid retention? If so adding Young Living Essential Oils to your water may really help you out! I DO suffer from some of these issues and I can tell you firsthand simply drinking a few drops of citrus to my water has changed my system so much!
3644
Here’s a few things that you need to know about “spiking” your water with the citrus oils from Young Living!

First things first. Like I mentioned above, when ingesting essential oils it is very important that you use “100% therapeutic grade essential oils” for that reason this recommendation ONLY pertains to Young Living Essential Oils. Please DO NOT take a chance.

Next, I’ve heard a lot of people really freak out when they hear you need to always be sure to drink your citrus oils from a glass {not plastic or styrofoam} Their first remark very often is “oh my gosh if it’s going to deteriorate a plastic or styrofoam cup won’t it do that to my insides?!” Rest assured it will not! Our bodies all have petro-chemicals and actually the citrus oils help our bodies detox and flush chemicals.

Always drink from a glass when using citrus oils. This can either be a glass such as a mason jar, a glass tumbler or a glass water bottle.  Did you know that you can even get stainless steel straws?  You can find some of my favorites HERE. Do to the fact that the oils can breakdown plastics and other synthetic materials, it’s always best to use glass or stainless steel.

Citrus oils are just all-around amazing!  I love drinking them because they taste good! They also have a lot of really cool benefits such as

  • Detoxing your body
  • Boosting your immune system
  • Dissolving fat

Win win right?!

Citrus oils are very inexpensive. You only need to add a few drops in a glass of water to get a yummy citrus flavor. Of course you can add more if you would like a stronger taste. {If you would like more information about ordering Young Living Essential Oils, follow the links at the end of this post!}3560

Young Living Citrus Essential oil come from the rinds. This means that they are not acidic and you don’t have to worry about these oils hurting the enamel on your teeth!!

Here’s a few fun tips,
Don’t feel like you only have to use one oil! I LOVE Grapefruit and Lime…unbelievably delicious! My husband loves Orange and Lime & Lemon and Orange! My kids all love Lemon and Lime! The combinations are truly endless! Don’t be shy, make up your own delicious citrus drink! Oh and Peppermint and Lemon or Peppermint and Orange is absolutely delightful!

Citrus oils aren’t just for water! Spike your tea! We have been doing this all summer and we love adding Orange to our sun tea! Grapefruit, Tangerine and Lime are really good in it as well!

So here’s my challenge if you have some Young Living citrus oils start drinking a glass of citrus water in the morning, I think you will be really surprised with how much better your body starts functioning!

**Citrus oils are photosensitive oils so it is best to avoid direct sunlight for 48 hours if using on exposed skin

Do you drink Citrus oils in your water? I’d love to know your favorite!3602

A love affair with Cedarwood

cedar

The love story between our family and Cedarwood started a bit rocky and it kinda smelled like puke. Let me explain! The first time I smelled Cedarwood I thought I was going to throw up! I thought it smelled like musty cat pee…YUCK! For the first few days the kids called it the “puke oil” seriously, it was bad. Not to be too dramatic but I gagged putting it on them the first day! Then something strange happened…one day {about 3-4 days} it smelled good…REALLY good…to all of us!! Now the kids LOVE it, in fact it is one of their favorite oils! Now, I can affectionally say that Cedarwood has a woodsy smell that is relaxing, soothing and comforting. When I was a little girl my parents had a beautiful hand-made cedar chest. This oil reminds me of it!

Cedarwood was the very first oil I wanted and got after my starter kit. Why? It’s calming so it’s wonderful at bedtime and nap time and that is something we needed.

Our Kids vs. Sleep

  • Our oldest son Elias has a difficult time falling asleep at bedtime…he has a hard time shutting down his brain…just like mom 🙂
  • Our daughter Gabbi (the girl twin) really likes to sleep but takes her a while to fall asleep, but once she’s out…she’s out and will sleep for hours upon hours!
  • Our youngest son Simon (the boy twin) is NOT a sleeper…he has an extremely difficult time falling asleep and once it’s light out he is up, it’s crazy because the twins have blackout curtains…it’s like his body just knows! (It was ok-ish for a while because he would take nice long naps in the afternoon. They are older and it’s effect day time life. He gets EXTREMELY emotional and irritable because he is tired.)

How we use Cedarwood for naps.
At nap time it usually it takes forever for Simon to fall asleep and once he does it only lasts for about 30 minutes. The first time I used Cedarwood at nap time I was thrilled. Simon fell asleep very quickly and stayed asleep for 2.5 hours…WOW! He even slept longer than his twin sister…that’s a big deal because she loves to sleep! Only Simon gets Cedarwood at nap time {Gabbi is tired and ready for a nap} It goes on the bottoms of his feet and back of his neck for nap time.

At bedtime all the kiddos are wound up from the day (especially in the summer) they need a little calming 🙂 All of them get Cedarwood on the back of their necks, bottoms of their feet and on their temples and foreheads. Every night cedarwood is diffused in the kids bedrooms {unless there is an illness}

Has bedtime changed? Oh my word yes! Where before (without essential oils) it would take between 30 minutes and an hour {sometimes longer} for them to calm down and fall asleep it now takes and average of 10-15 minutes!!!! AND Simon stays asleep until usually 7:30! What?!? That’s amazing right!? Cedarwood has changed our bedtime routine is such a wonderful way! All the kiddos are better rested in the morning which results in happier days! Plus since they are falling asleep quicker at night that means mommy and daddy get more time together…WIN!

But cedarwood is NOT just a one trick pony!!!
Did you know that Cedarwood helps with hair loss? We just recently started on my hubby 1-2 drops in the thinning area at night. I will give an update on this process next month!

But wait, there’s more that Cedarwood can do! Now its summer time!! Yay, Hot days, warm night, running through the sprinklers and oh yeah mosquitoes! Yuck! I hate mosquitoes. We do a family hike every night in a really wooded area. There is  river running parallel with the trail, which means we get swarmed by mosquitoes. Did I mention I hate mosquitoes? It’s truly horrible not to mention itchy! At least that’s how it was…then we started using Cedarwood as our bug repellent! It’s super easy to make! There are a ton of different recipes out there but these are my faves so far!

Don’t have a glass spray bottle? No problem!
deetfree

I got Cedarwood thinking that sleep was all we would use it for…boy was I WORNG!

Do you use Cedarwood? What was your first impression of the smell? How do you feel about it now? Leave a comment telling me!

That all changed a few weeks ago when I started getting compliments on my Essential Oil Diffuser Necklace I made! I got tons of people asking how they could get one! Wait…hold up…what the heck is a diffuser necklace? Well, I’m happy you asked because they are AWESOME! Diffuser Necklaces are basically like your own personal diffuser that goes wherever you go!! This is a great way to keep your favorite essential oils and blends close to you throughout your day!  While wearing a Diffuser Necklace you are able to experience the awesome scent of essential oils.

Happy Digestion with DiGize!

DIGI

In the past I’ve mentioned that my family {myself including} suffers from some pretty significant gastrointestinal issues. Because of this I could not wait to order DiGize!

What is DiGize?
DiGize is a blend of Tarragon, Ginger, Peppermint, Juniper, Fennel, Lemongrass, Anise and Patchouli. It helps in promoting a healthy digestive system.

As it happened the day my very first bottle of DiGize arrived my mom stopped by to visit the kids before running her errands (it’s her side of the family that has all the stomach issues) Well, surprise surprise she had an incredibly bad stomachache that was resulting in not only stomach pains but significant nausea. DiGize to the rescue!! I gave her two drops DiGize to apply topically to her stomach. She visited with the kids for about 10 or 15 minutes and then we all left at the same time, she went to go run her errands and we went headed out to our favorite hiking trail! diWe spent two hours on our trail (it was wonderful) when we arrived back to our car in the parking lot I was surprised to find a sticky note on our car window?! How funny…it was a note from my mom!!! (Our hiking trail is right off the main road that you take to get to her house) Here’s the note 🙂

So there we were, day one and my impression of DiGize was already ….AWESOME!!

Like I said I’m a girl with serious hereditary stomach issues, so it wasn’t all that long until I got to try DiGize is for myself…it was actually that night.

I had a serious double over, want to throw up, so nauseated stomach ache that night… Guess what I did? Yep you guessed it, two drops topically on my stomach worked like a charm just like my mama said!

Since that day my husband and I have used DiGize countless times with the same results: bye bye stomachache and nausea! I’m lactose intolerant, DiGize has really helped with all the related issues to that! We’ve used it both topically and internally: *1 drop in a glass of water – Oh and take it from me don’t accidentally dropped two drops in your glass, this stuff although it works fantastic does not taste fantastic {*This is based on the pure therapeutic quality of Young Living Essential Oils ONLY.  Other oils may not be 100% pure making them unsafe to ingest!}

Oh and did you know that DiGize can soothe itchy mosquitoes bites? Well it does, trust me! I was recently in an area without my repellent and was attacked! The itching was almost unbearable. I rubbed a little bit of DiGize on each bite and the itching stopped almost immediately!!! Who’d a thought huh!

Do you love DiGize? How do you use it? I would love to hear!

Mmmmm Orange!

OrangeHave you fallen in love with Orange essential oil yet? If you haven’t tried it yet you will be surprised how much flavor it adds to your water, your cooking and treats!

Orange Essential Oil helps with skin complexion and wrinkles, boosts your immune system, helps with indigestion, detoxify and balances your body, it helps lift your spirits and it also helps cleanse your colon!!

My husband and I both start our mornings with a *glass of orange water, if you have not tried this it is so incredibly good! It’s really easy just add two or three drops to a glass of water and enjoy! {*This is based on the pure therapeutic quality of Young Living Essential Oils ONLY.  Other oils may not be 100% pure making them unsafe to ingest!}

I love to add a drop or two to my face cream in the morning, it smells glorious and makes my skin glow!

We also love to diffuse it because of its fresh and uplifting smell! I also just recently read that it helps with SAD (seasonal affective disorder) so we will be sure to always have orange through the winter months!

Our whole family enjoys this oil and one of our favorite treats to add this essential oil to is Orange Creamsicle Smoothies…seriously YUM! These will especially delicious in July when our Pacific Northwest weather realizes it’s summer and it gets HOT! I’ve always loved creamsicles. They are my moms favorite cold treat so I grew up with them always in the freezer, but I’ll be honest until this Orange Creamsicle smoothie recipe it had been a really long time since I had anything Creamsicle. Why? Have you read the ingredients on those packages in the store? Do you understand what you are reading? Yeah, me either! So we never buy them…oh if only we could make them!

Hello Orange Creamsicle Smoothy! This a super easy recipe with only six ingredients!

  • Greek Yogurt – 1 cup (plain) * This is very greek yogurt tasting so if you don’t like Greek yogurt which I know a lot of people don’t you can add regular yogurt or even Almond milk or Coconut milk
  • Orange Juice – 2 cups (organic or fresh squeezed)
  • Vanilla extract – 1 teaspoon
  • Honey – 2 or 3 tablespoons
  • Ice – 3 or 4 cups (depending on the consistency you want you can always add more or less)
  • And the star Orange essential oil! {please note that I’m ONLY recommending Young Living}

Add everything to your blender and blend until smooth and creamy. Add to your favorite glass and enjoy {let sit for a minute or two} You could even add some whipped cream on top!
*Fun tip – leave out the ice and make yummy homemade frozen Orange Creamsicles!

I have multiple oily smoothie recipes but this is one of favorites!

Don’t forget to add it to your next order!

Already love Orange essential oil? How do you use it I would love to hear!
