I have a question for you…

Did you know today is R U OK? Day?

R U OK? is a non profit suicide prevention organisation founded by Australian ad man Gavin Larkin in 2009 as a result of his participation in Landmark Worldwide‘s Self-Expression and Leadership Program, which requires attendees to create a community project.

R U OK? Day is annually in September (the second Thursday) dedicated to remind people to ask family, friends and co-workers the question, “R U OK?”, in a real, thoughtful and meaningful way because this is one thing everyone can do to make a difference to anyone who might be struggling.

Sadly, I’m sure we all know somebody or have been affected by suicide. Unfortunately in my personal life there have been many people I’ve known who have taken their own lives, but there is one suicide that is a raw and painful wound 17 years later. I will never forget the shock of hearing he took his life, we were friends, we were good friends. In high school we would take classes together just so we could laugh! I would’ve never thought that this would be the way his life would end. Before his suicide happiness, loving, smiling, full of joy, and funny would be the ways to described him outwardly, but inside was a totally different story, that even his mother said that the suicide was a shock she had no idea. This just goes to show that no matter how somebody looks on the outside you never know what’s going on inside, that’s why R U OK? Day is so amazing, important and needed. Please go and ask your family members, friends and co workers R U OK? You never know just simply asking could change somebody’s life. As I write this my eyes burn with tears remembering the good and the sad of my lost friend, but it give me hope that the simple question R U OK? could be life changing.

You don’t need to be an expert to ask R U OK? You have to fix or solve someone’s problems, you just need to be there and listen without judgement, encourage then simply follow-up! Show the people around you who might be hurting and struggling that you care! Not sure how to start a conversation? Get tips from R U OK? HERE.
